The concept behind R-2000 grew out of typical Prairie ingenuity. It started with a 1970s research project in Saskatchewan which focused on developing ways for houses to use less energy. The findings clearly indicated that energy consumption in new homes could be substantially reduced. The R-2000 Home program was begun in the early 1980s to further research in this area and distribute that knowledge to home builders across Canada.
The R-2000 Program recognized the concept of the house functioning as a system. All components have an effect on other components - and changing one will have an effect on the others. This simple concept profoundly changed the way industry built new homes.
Homes are changing as the R-2000 Home program continues to lead advances in cold climate building technology, new insulation products, high performance window glazing, and ventilation and heating systems. We no longer have to build super-efficient thick walled homes with small windows. Today, R-2000 Homes are sunny, bright, and healthy dwellings.
The R-2000 standard continues to change and adopt the latest in proven cold
climate building technology and leads the industry in producing the best performing
homes possible in Manitoba.
