Exterior Doors

Security considerations

As doors provide the easiest means of access for forced entry into your home, aside from energy considerations, some thought should be given to improving their security.

The space between the doorframe and rough opening in the dead bolt location should be framed solidly to reinforce that critical area. Dead bolt latching plate screws should be long enough to penetrate right through the doorframe, the solid shimming, and into the rough opening framing.

Unbreakable glass can be purchased for window glazing and sidelights, which reduces the potential for someone to break the glass and gain access to the dead bolt or other security hardware.
