Floor Joist Headers
The advantages and disadvantages of various options to consider
The answer is to simply have your builder take the extra time to insulate and seal this area properly — to the same standard as the rest of the building envelope — and be willing to pay a little more to have this work done. This can be accomplished through a number of methods:
Fully insulated and properly sealed polyethylene AVB on interior of header
Advantages
- No special construction procedures
- High R-value possible
Disadvantages
- Requires extra time and effort
- Difficult where floor joists run parallel with wall
Fully insulated and proper rigid insulation AVB on interior of header
Advantages
- High R-values possible
- Easier to work with than polyethylene
Disadvantages
- Requires extra time and effort
- Difficult where floor joist run parallel with wall
Header wrap and exterior insulation
Advantages
- Easy to understand and install
- Easy to obtain a high quality air barrier
Disadvantages
- Insulation values are limited
Spray in expanding foam insulation
Advantages
- High R-values easily obtained
- Air tight barrier easily obtained even around obstructions
