Heating and Heat Distribution
Air sourced heat pump systems
Air sourced heat pumps operate fairly similarly on the inside of the house to their ground sourced heat pump counterparts. The major system difference is that instead of getting their heat from the earth, this system gets its heat from the exterior air. However, the colder it is outside, the less heat energy is available for the heat pump to use for household heating. Consequently, air sourced heat pump systems do not work very well when the temperature is below 7°C.
While not regularly installed in Manitoba, some air-sourced heat pumps are in place in this province and do provide heat for the house in the spring and fall. In the colder winter months, a secondary conventional electric or gas fired forced air heating system is used for home heating.
