Benefits
Appearance and performance
One of the most distinctive features of your new home will be the windows.
They affect both the exterior appearance and interior ambience.
Windows can also be a liability. With Manitoba's severe windows, excessive
condensation on windows is one of the most common problems homeowners face. This
can be a problem even in a new home since concrete, wood framing
and many other construction materials may take up to a year or more to dry.
Many types of windows can also be "energy robbers" allowing substantial amounts
of heat to escape from a home during the heating season. In fact, heat loss through
windows can account for up to 30% of the total heat loss in some homes.
Comfort and condensation control
On the other hand, windows that are properly designed, constructed, sized
and oriented can actually provide more heat to your home then they lose. High
performance windows can also make your home feel more comfortable by reducing
drafts and allowing your home to have higher humidity levels without developing
a condensation problem.
The R-2000 energy target
Because R-2000 Homes are designed to meet an energy performance target, window
selection and placement are particularly important. The type of windows selected,
their energy rating (ER) (link to
Performance rating) and orientation play important roles in determining whether
a home can meet the R-2000 target.
